What another beautiful day! The first part of our journey took us through rolling, wonderfully green hills. It was absolutely gorgeous.
Then came the second part of the drive: Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki. What stunning lakes they are! I was very lucky at Lake Pukaki because there wasn’t a breath of wind. Just as I was packing away my camera gear, a breeze picked up and the reflections of the clouds disappeared.
When we arrived at the campsite, we were greeted by a man originally from Friesland in the Netherlands. We reckon he’s about 35. He came to New Zealand on his own ten years ago. He’s now married to a woman whose parents are also Frisian, has two daughters, and runs a campsite with room for 800 people. I certainly wouldn’t want to be there when it’s full, but it’s quite an achievement.
A weather warning has been issued for tomorrow, so we’ll have to see what happens. Apparently, in some places the winds could reach hurricane force.
I took the last photo because I find it remarkable how differently many people seem to experience the world these days. We’d enjoyed a lovely lunch there when these two women arrived. All the usual poses: arms up, arms out to the sides, lots of selfies, a quick check of the pictures, and then off to the next photogenic spot. I suspect they were influencers, but whatever they were, it strikes me as a rather empty existence — living for likes.
