North Island 12 October

The weather changed overnight. We heard some pretty heavy rain showers drumming on the roof of our campervan. Then the power went out as well. Normally that isn’t a problem, because our campervan is self-sufficient and has its own backup power supply. But that wasn’t working quite as it should, so in the end we switched off the fridge.

When we went to return the keys this morning, we discovered there had been a major power outage.

Our campsite was wonderfully peaceful, but it wasn’t in a particularly good location for lovely walks, so we decided to move on this morning. First we stocked up on supplies, then drove a little farther. At the previous campsite we had been the only guests; here there are quite a lot of people, which takes a bit of getting used to again. And, as luck would have it, the owner is Spanish! That gave me a lovely opportunity to practise my Spanish, and I even received a nice compliment.

The weather stayed rainy all day. We’ve come up with a clever new system for storing our groceries. Even though the campervan is quite large, we still run short of space now and then, but we’ve solved that problem.

Henk is happily cooking in the communal kitchen, and I’m still sitting comfortably outside at seven in the evening.
